Schematic representation of how carrying a single copy of Xa only (males) or a copy of both Xa and Xi (females) affects the effect size of age-related DNA methylation differences observed in population studies. Note that the effect size of an aDMC specific for the Xa is twice that in males than females resulting in higher statistical power to detect such Xa-specific aDMCs in males than females. The same reasoning applies to aVMCs. Male-specific aDMC and female-specific aDMC are colored by blue and red, respectively.
