Use of study populations in each analysis. The 363 alcohol-associated CpGs previously identified by Liu et al. were replicated using data from 2042 participants of five cohorts studies embedded within the BIOS consortium. An additional 841 participants from the KORA F4 study were combined with these 2042 participants and together comprise our model building dataset. The model building dataset was used to train the prediction models and to test the reproducibility of the prediction models via internal cross-validation. The transportability of the models was tested in the external validation phase based on 1794 participants from three cohorts that were independent from the data used for model building and internal validation.
