5-AZA-dC treatment results in increased expression of the cellular senescence marker p21 and increased PARP-cleavage. Protein expression of p16, p21, Rb and PARP normalised to α-tubulin as determined by densitometry (Image J) (Western blots are represented in Additional file 5: Figure S6). Each condition was undertaken on two biological replicates. Significant changes are starred: *p value  ≤ 0.05 or **p value  ≤ 0.005 (T test)
