Schematic diagram shows the transcriptional regulation of immune checkpoints by epigenetic modifications in breast tumor microenvironment. The transcriptional upregulation of PD-1, CTLA-4, TIM-3, and LAG-3 in breast tumor microenvironment are dependent on both DNA methylation and the distribution of H3K9me3 and H3K27me3 across their promoter regions. PD-L1 and TIGIT are not included in this schematic because there is no difference in their methylation profile between tumor and non-tumor microenvironment, as described in the text
